Atlas Air to fly NCA’s 747- 400Fs

ATLAS Air is to take over the 747-400F operations of Nippon Cargo Airlines. The Japanese carrier was forced to ground its entire 11-strong 747 freighter fleet last year over Japan’s Civil Aviation Bureau

Concerns about its maintenance records. Each of its eight 747-8Fs came back on stream over the following months – but its three 747-400s remained idle. The carrier said it would consolidate its maintenance and fleet operations to a single aircraft type, the 747-8F. It has now extended its agreement with Atlas Air, which is to operate the three aircraft on a crew, maintenance and insurance (CMI) basis. The three aircraft are now scheduled to go into service on transpacific routes in April, July and September of this year, to “support the growing ecommerce business” according to NCA chief Hitoshi Oshika.
